Abstract

This report summarizes an archeological survey of Oglethorpe Power Corporation's proposed North Zebulon substation, on the east side of County Road 249, at the northern edge of the town of Zebulon, in central Pike County. The 1.5 ha (3.7 ac) project area is presently in agriculturally terraced pasture land, and is bisected by an old county road bed and an electrical transmission line. The survey was undertaken to ensure that the project is in compliance with federal regulations governing the consideration of project effects on significant cultural resources (archeological and historic sites). The survey included a background and literature search, surface inspection, and the excavation of eight shovel tests. One site, a small surface scatter of historic artifacts associated with a house shown on a 1909 soil map, but not shown in a 1937 aerial photograph, was identified within the project area. This site, 9PK32, has been completely obliterated, except for the scatter of artifacts, by razing, plowing and terracing. We recommend that 9PK32 is ineligible to the National Register of Historic Places due to its limited research potential. We conclude that no significant archeological sites occur in the project area and that the proposed project will have no adverse effect on archeological sites.
