Abstract

Cultural resource surveys were conducted on 1,100 acres of the Oconee National Forest in Jasper County, Georgia in areas located west of Georgia Highway 11 during the months of February through May 1997. This survey was completed prior to timber harvesting and thinning activities in Compartments 102, 108, 110, 112, and 113. Twenty-five new archeological sites were found in these areas. Not one is considered eligible to the National Register of Historic Places at this time. Seven sites are considered potentially eligible (GA08-1702, GA08-1705, GA08-1706, GA08-1709, GA08-1710, GA08-1712, GA08-1714) and seventeen are considered ineligible to the NRHP (GA08-1690, GA08-1691, GA08-1692, GA08-1693, GA08-1694, GA08-1695, GA08-1696, GA08-1697, GA08-1698, GA08-1699, GA08-1700, GA08-1701, GA08-1703, GA08-1704, GA08-1707, GA08-1708, GA08-1711, GA08-1713). Also, fifteen ineligible isolated finds were recorded. All seven of the potentially eligible sites will be protected by in-place avoidance. Timber activities will have no impact on these sites in the project area.
