Abstract

An intensive archeological survey of a proposed 2.1 km long sewer line along Dozier Creek in northern Muscogee County determined that no archeological sites are present in the area of potential effect. The area of potential effect is a corridor 12 m wide, mostly within the floodplain of the creek. The northern 400 to 500 m of the project area traverses ridge slopes overlooking a very narrow creek bottom. Examination of old maps and review of archeological surveys nearby indicated that sites would likely occur only on elevated landforms near, but outside of the project area. The excavation of 36 shovel tests in the wooded project area failed to recover any cultural material. Thus, the project will have no adverse effect on significant archeological sites (sites listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places). In regard to cultural resources, the principal investigator recommends that the project be given clearance to proceed.
