Abstract

Georgia Transmission Corporation (formerly Oglethorpe Power Corporation) proposes to construct a new substation at the intersection of Nickville Road and County Road 118 southwest of the small cross-roads community of Dewey Rose, about 11 km (7 mi) northwest of Elberton in Elbert County, Georgia. The proposed substation will be constructed on a 2.3 ha (5.7 ac) tract. The archeological survey was required so that Georgia Transmission Corporation is in compliance with federal regulations (National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended) concerning the disposition of significant archeological sites that may be affected by construction. One prehistoric archeological site (9EB520) was found in the northern corner of the survey tract. Although it is in the area of potential effect, it lacks integrity and research potential, and therefore is not eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. We conclude that no significant archeological sites occur in the project area and that the proposed project will have no adverse effect on any archeological sites.
