Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, GDOT Project BHF-STP-001-5(24), Cobb and Fulton Counties, Georgia, was surveyed v with respect to -archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The Georgia Department of Transportation proposes to replace the bridge on US 41/Northside Parkway spanning the Chattahoochee River. The existing four lane bridge would be replaced with a six lane bridge. An archaeological survey of approximately 94.4 meters (310 feet) of temporary construction easement from the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area (CRNRA), Palisades Unit in Cobb County was required under the provisions of the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979. Temporary construction easements from within the CRNRA were to be utilized for entrance and parking facility upgrades. A permit to conduct the survey was acquired on June 6, 1997 (ARPA Permit No. CHAT-97-003); the archaeological survey was conducted between June 10 and June 12, 1997. In addition, approximately 1.77 kilometers (1.1 miles) of privately held property adjacent to US 41/Northside Drive in Cobb and Fulton Counties was surveyed as part of the proposed project. The archaeological survey consisted of an intensive pedestrian survey and systematic shovel testing. The goals of the survey were to locate, document, and assess the National Register eligibility of archaeological properties located within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. The survey located one site, 9C0527, within the proposed project corridor. Site 9C0527 is not recommended as eligible to the National Register of Historic Places and no further investigation is recommended. Therefore, it is concluded that implementation of GDOT Project BHF-STP-001-5(24), Cobb and Fulton Counties, Georgia, would not affect archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register.
