Abstract

An intensive archeological survey of a proposed 1.2 km long roadway in Bartow County discovered one prehistoric site, 9BR882. The 30 m wide project area, which was in a thick stand of grass, was surveyed by excavating shovel tests on 20 m intervals along the length of the proposed corridor. The project area is situated on the nearly level floodplain of Pettit Creek, a tributary of the Etowah River. Site 9BR882 consists of a sparse subsurface scatter of chert flakes and a quartz cobble. Four positive shovel tests revealed deposits between 5 and 60 cm below surface. Because cultural material at the site is sparse and vertically dispersed, we believe that the site has little to no potential for yielding important information and therefore recommend that 9BR882 is not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Two previously recorded sites that were depicted on state site files maps as being within or very close to the project area are not in the project area. One of these sites, 9BR27, is actually about 800 m further north than depicted and the other, 9BR858, a site determined ineligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, has been destroyed.
