Abstract

On September 16-17, 1997 New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey for the widening and improvements to Hartley Bridge Road, Macon, Bibb County, Georgia. The project corridor is located from Mount Pleasant Church Road to Houston Road, excluding the section of interchange. The portion of Hartley Bridge Road which crosses over Interstate 75 was not surveyed as this is considered a separate project by the Georgia Department of Transportation. The proposed improvements are within a 100 foot right-of-way and the total length of the proposed project survey was approximately 4.7 kilometers (2.9 miles). This report provides a prehistoric and historic background for the area and chronicles the results of the archaeological survey. Field coverage of the proposed right-of-way widening consisted of transect survey. A pedestrian survey of the corridor utilized alternate 30 meter interval shovel tests along either side of the road as well as visual inspection of the exposed ground surface. The inspection located one archaeological site, 9Bi87, located within the study corridor. This site is recommended not eligible for the National Register, therefore no further archaeological testing is recommended.
