Abstract

On January 28 and 29, 1998, New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey for the widening and improvements to McFarland Road, in Forsyth County, Georgia. The project corridor is located off of Georgia State Route 400 between McGinnis Ferry Road and State Route 9 (Atlanta Highway). The proposed project will widen McFarland Road from two 3.6 meter (12 foot) lanes to four 3.6 meter (12 foot) lanes with a median. Therefore the survey area consisted of a 76.2 meter (250 foot) right-of-way on the existing centerline except at the McFarland Road/GA 400 intersection where a 111.5 square meter (1,200 square foot) area, centered on the intersection was surveyed. The total length of the project area is approximately 6.1 kilometers (3.8 miles). This report provides a prehistoric and historic background for the area and completely chronicles the results of the archaeological survey. Field coverage of the proposed right-of-way widening consisted of transect survey. A pedestrian survey of the corridor utilized 30 meter shovel test intervals along single transects as well as visual inspection of the exposed ground surface. No archaeological sites were identified within the areas of possible impact, therefore no further archaeological work is recommended in this area.
