Abstract

On October 2 and 3, 1997 New South Associates conducted a Phase I Archaeological survey of the proposed West Cobb Loop, specifically Alternate D, in Cobb County, Georgia. New South Associates previously conducted a survey of is of Alternate D in 1993 (Wheaton et al. 1993), therefore the project corridor currently consists of approximately 1.75 miles of realignment between Ward and Creek. Sites 9CO353 (WCL-5) and 9CO354 (WCL-3) were also revisited at this time to conduct a site inspection and determine the sites' locations and the potential impact the current proposed project would impose on these archaeological resources. This report provides a prehistoric and historic background for the area and completely chronicles the results of the archaeological survey. Field coverage of the proposed right-of-way widening consisted of transect survey. A pedestrian survey of the corridor utilized 30 meter shovel test intervals along single transects as well as visual inspection of the exposed ground surface. No new archaeological sites were identified within the areas of possible impact, therefore no further archaeological work is recommended.
