Abstract

Oglethorpe Power Corporation (OPC) is planning a substation adjacent to an existing transmission line corridor in Douglas County near Winston. The transmission line crosses Mason Creek Road approximately 2 kilometers south of Interstate 20. The proposed substation tract encompasses a small upland area bounded by Mobley Creek to the northwest, Mason Creek Road to the east, and the existing transmission line corridor to the south. In the process of surveying the tract prior to purchase, the OPC survey crew encountered what appeared to be an abandoned, wooded historic cemetery. OPC then called Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. (SAS), and requested that one of our staff make a field visit to determine whether a cemetery is located on the tract. If so, the SAS staff member would attempt to determine the cemetery limits and make pertinent recommendations to OPC regarding protecting, preserving, and interpreting the cemetery.
