Abstract

In May 1997, Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted an intensive archaeological survey of the proposed Haynes Bridge Road widening corridor in northern Fulton County, Georgia. The project corridor is approximately 2.6 kilometers (1.6 miles) long and 60 meters (200 feet) wide, extending on both sides of Haynes Bridge Road from Old Alabama Road to Big Creek. The survey was conducted for The LPA Group, Inc. in compliance with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Plan Development Process. Project goals included background research, archaeological field survey, and evaluation of all archaeological resources within the project corridor for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Background research was conducted at the Georgia State Archaeological Site Files in Athens, the Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the Department of Natural Resources in Atlanta, and the Georgia Department of Archives and History (GDAH) in Atlanta. Review of the Georgia site files identified no previously recorded archaeological sites within 0.8 kilometer (0.5 mile) of the project corridor. There are no previously identified archaeological sites within 0.8 kilometer (0.5 mile) of the project corridor. At the HPD, the Fulton County file of properties listed on or nominated to the NRHP was examined. Historic properties located in or near the project corridor are addressed in a separate report (Smith 1997). At the GDAH, published county histories and historic maps were examined. Historic maps of the area show that there were approximately thirteen structures near the Haynes Bridge Road corridor in 1947. The remains of one of these structures were identified during field survey (9FU291, described below); modern development of the project corridor has replaced the rest of these historic buildings. The archaeological field survey consisted of shovel test excavations at 30 meter (100 feet) intervals along both sides of Haynes Bridge Road. Shovel tests were not excavated in areas of extreme slope, wetland conditions, or exposed red clay subsoil. The field survey identified one archaeological site, 9FU291, the remains of a circa 1932-1947 structure. This site is located within the proposed corridor on the west side of Haynes Bridge Road, approximately 0.21 kilometer (0.2 mile) north of the intersection of Berkshire Manor Drive. This site is recommended ineligible for the NRHP, and no further archaeological investigations are recommended for the project corridor.
