Abstract

At the request of the Laurens County Board of Commissioners, a reconnaisance level field survey was conducted for archaeological and historic resources on a 250 by 200 feet tract of land just south of the Laurens and Wilkinson County line west of County Road 393/Harry Green Road in Laurens County. The area is a proposed borrow source for Project PR-2(175), Laurens County, Georgia. The purpose of the survey was to determine if the proposed construction activity would have an effect on cultural resources listed on or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The survey, conducted on September 29, 1996, resulted in the discovery of a diffuse prehistoric lithic scatter, 9LS209, within the proposed boundaries of the project area. Shovel tests and surface indications of the site area within the proposed borrow area indicated poor integrity and limited artifact classes. Due to the surficial nature of the site, lack of integrity and sparseness of materal, site 9LS209 is not likely to yield significant new information to the history of the area and should not be considered eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The use of this area as a borrow source is recommended cleared for use.
