Abstract

This report presents the results of an intensive archaeological survey of a proposed Rocky Creek Channel overflow in Richmond County, Georgia. Due to the involvement of the Corps of Engineers, a federal agency, the project requires compliance with various legislation concerning historic properties which may be adversely effected by the proposed undertaking.

The project corridor consists of a 4 km (2.3 mile) long, 33 meter (110 foot) wide easement located on the south side of the City of Augusta along the western edge of the Phinizy Swamp (Figures 1 and 2). The project corridor, composed of agricultural fields and mixed hardwoods and pines, is traversed by several ditches and canals that facilitate drainage in the Phinizy Swamp area.
