Abstract

This report describes an archaeological survey and evaluation of SR 140, Proposed Reinhardt College Parkway, project area in Cherokee County, Georgia. This survey was carried out in November, 1996 and August, 1997 by Southern Research archaeologists and field personnel. Three historic archaeological sites were discovered as a result of this reconnaissance survey. 9Ck1043 is a mill dam with associated raceways and possible mill foundation. 9Ck1044 has two check dams possibly associated with the main dam. 9Ck1045 contains two home sites, one a historic structure with a cellar, schist and brick chimney remnants, and a well, the other is a modern mobile home site located down the hill from the first. Only one of these sites, 9Ck1043, is located within the right-of-way for the proposed highway expansion. This site is recommended as eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places at the local level of significance.
