Abstract

Archeological data recovery was conducted at the site of a late eighteenth mill and mill dam on Fort Gordon, Georgia to mitigate damage that will result from the construction of a new dam. Data recovery included excavation, the detailed mapping of structural remains, archival research, and a survey of the drained lake bed. Archival research established a ca. 1790 construction date for the mill which sawed lumber and ground grain, and was owned by a number of influential Augusta citizens. The mill site, 9Ri430, is eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places and will be affected by construction. However, the fact that data recovery took place means that the impact will not be adverse. A temporally undiagnostic prehistoric lithic scatter (9Ri429) was found through shovel testing in the drained lake bed. This site is recommended as ineligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places due to its low research potential. We recommended that construction should be allowed to proceed.
