Abstract

A phase I archeological survey of the Newnan Bypass was conducted for Coweta County and Rosser Lowe on October 28 and 29, 1997 by Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. Five archeological sites and three artifact occurrences were located within the three mile long and 250 ft wide corridor. It appears from the small size and low artifact density that most of the sites functioned as temporary campsites during the prehistoric period. One site seemingly functioned as a workshop for producing stone tools: the ground was littered with quartz flakes, cobbles, and other debris. The artifact occurrences represent isolated artifacts. One of these, Occurrence 3, was a sherd of historic Creek pottery (ca. 1750 -1820). The northern half of the three mile long bypass has already been cleared of trees and partially graded for road construction. Although the southern half has not been disturbed by construction, years of agriculture and erosion have taken a toll on the landscape and the sites. Because of these disturbances none of the sites have good integrity. This, combined with low research potential, results in the recommendation that none of the sites are eligible to the National Register of Historic Places. No further work is recommended.
