Abstract

The Hartwell Marina wishes to renew its lease with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, for a ca. 20 ha (50 ac) tract on Lake Hartwell. To be in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the Corps of Engineers required the marina to conduct an intensive archeological survey of the undeveloped portion of the tract, a discontiguous area delineated by the Corps of Engineers and comprising about 12 ha (30 ac). No previously known sites are recorded in the tract, but one house site was shown on maps to be in the project area. The area was archeologically surveyed on November 19, 1996 and two sites recorded. Site 9HA37 is a twentieth century farmstead consisting of the remnants of a house, barn and privy. Site 9HA38 is a prehistoric site consisting of a sparse scatter of quartz flakes on the shoreline of the lake. Because of the sparse amounts of material and the high degree of disturbance, we believe neither site is able to yield additional important information on the history and prehistory of the area. Therefore, we recommend that both sites are not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. It is our opinion that future development at Hartwell Marina will not adversely affect significant cultural resources.
