Abstract

Engelhard Corporation wishes to channelize about 150 m of Little Commissioner Creek that abuts a retaining berm to a kaolin mining tailings pond in northwest Wilkinson County (Figure 1). The sharply winding creek is threatening the long-term stability of the retaining berm. Tribble & Richardson, Inc., consulting engineers, is assisting Englehard with the design and permitting of the channelization project. The project requires a Section 404 permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Savannah District has required that an archeological survey be conducted to insure that no significant cultural resources (archeological sites eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places) are adversely affected by the proposed undertaking. Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., a consulting firm that has conducted several projects in Wilkinson County, was hired by Tribble & Richardson to conduct an intensive archeological survey of the project area. Because the project area is extremely small, measuring only 150 by 50 m, the survey was accomplished quickly, on September 18, 1995. Because no sites were found and because of our familiarity with the area, this report of our survey will be brief.
