Abstract

On April 2, 1998, New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey for the proposed improvements to New Clinton Road, Macon, Bibb County, Georgia. The project corridor consists of the extension of New Clinton Road from the intersection at Millerfield Road to the Bibb County/Jones County line. The proposed project will resurface the existing roadway with turn lanes added as necessary. The resurfacing and additional turn lanes will take place within a 15.25 meter (50 foot) right-of-way and the total project length is approximately 2.01 kilometers (1.25 miles). This report provides a prehistoric and historic background for the area and completely chronicles the results of the archaeological survey. Field coverage of the proposed right-of-way widening consisted of transect survey. A pedestrian survey of the corridor utilized alternate 30 meter (100 foot) shovel test intervals along single transects as well as visual inspection of the exposed ground surface. The inspection located one archaeological site, 9Bi100, and one isolated find located within the study corridor. They are recommended not eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, therefore no further archaeological testing is recommended.
