Abstract

This summary report covers Federal fiscal years 1995 and 1996: from October, 1994 through September 1996, presenting the activities of the Cultural Heritage Management Program of the Chattahoochee and Oconee National Forests in Georgia. The operation of the program is under the aegis of the National Historic Preservation Act, the Forest Service Region 8 Programmatic Agreement (PA), and the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Advisory Council and Georgia State Historic Preservation Officer. Text and tables present information on the 16,702 acres surveyed, 120 prehistoric sites and 173 historic sites recorded, of which 124 are to be protected for the future. Under the PA and MOU, 15,320 acres were inventoried without need for survey. During this period, 9 sites were evaluated and reported with assistance of the Georgia Mountains Archaeological Society, the University of Georgia; and the Passport In Time Forest Service volunteer heritage resource program. Various heritage public education and interpretive activities, such as public lectures, interpretive signs, exhibits, and the Track Rock brochure were prepared, and a new "Friends of Scull Shoals" non-profit organization begun.
