Abstract

On September 18 and 22, 1998, New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of the proposed Octagon Road Corridor in Henry County, Georgia. The study corridor consists of approximately 2.9 km (1.8 miles) on new location with a 91 meter (300 feet) width. A pedestrian survey of the corridor utilized 30 meter (98 feet) shovel test intervals along three parallel transects as well as visual inspection of the exposed ground surface provided in a clear cut and along a dirt road. This survey located one new archaeological site, 9Hy252 and a historic cemetery. The site is an early to mid -twentieth-century house site. It does not appear to be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. No further study of the site is recommended and avoidance of the cemetery is also recommended. No additional study of the corridor is necessary.
