Abstract

An archeological survey of Whitfield Avenue and Diamond Causeway was conducted to ensure that Chatham County is in compliance with federal regulations concerning the disposition of significant archeological sites. Eight archeological sites are located within, or close to, the area of potential effect. One site, Battery Wimberly (9CH705), a Civil War gun emplacement, is already on the National Register of Historic Places. We recommend that this resource should be avoided during road widening by constructing the new lanes on the south side of the existing causeway. The second site is not on the Register, but is considered eligible for listing. This is a prehistoric site located on the west side of Whitfield Avenue. Although the overall site may be significant, the portion within the proposed right-of-way has poor integrity and low research potential. Thus, construction will affect this site, but the impact should not be adverse. None of the remaining six sites are considered eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places and no further work should be necessary prior to construction.
