An archeological survey of the selected route of the last segment of the Harry S. Truman Parkway was conducted to ensure that Chatham County is in compliance with federal regulations concerning the disposition of significant archeological sites. The final segment of the parkway will be routed from Abercorn Street on the south, across the Vernon River and associated salt marsh, then swing north through the Forest City Gun Club and the eastern portion of Bacon Park Golf Course. It will terminate at Derrenne Avenue opposite the already constructed portion of the parkway. The survey found 10 archeological sites within the 60 in (200 ft) wide and 10. 9 kin (6.8 mi) long corridor. Most of the sites are large scatters of historic (late nineteenth and early twentieth century) artifacts that do not appear to be associated with house remains. It is suggested that these scatters resulted from the secondary deposition of household refuse. None of the sites meet the criteria that are required for a site to be considered significant, i.e., eligible to the National Register of Historic Places. It is the opinion of the Principal Investigator that no further archeological study is necessary at these sites, and that construction of the final segment of the parkway should be allowed to proceed.
