Abstract

The firm of Archaeological Consultants, Inc. conducted a cultural resource survey of an area proposed for the expansion of the Charlie Brown Airport. This property lies north of the present airport, east of Sandy Creek and west of U.S. 278/78 and an adjoining public housing project. At least eighty percent of the area has been extensively disturbed by a commercial brick clay borrow pit. Five areas of cultural interest were examined: two prehistoric sites, one cemetery, one probable farmstead, and a knoll exhibiting Civil War fortifications. Only the Civil War fortifications retain sufficient cultural integrity to be recommended eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.
