Abstract

In August 1999, Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted an archaeological survey of a 1.4 mile segment of SR 17/115 in Habersham County, Georgia. Proposed improvements for this segment of highway consist of widening on the north side of SR 17/115. This investigation included background research and field survey and was conducted in compliance with cultural resources legislation (National Historic Preservation Act, 16 USC 470, as amended 1992) and cultural resources regulations (36 CFR 800: Protection of Historic Properties). Background research, consisting of a review of the sites database maintained by the Georgia State Archaeological Site Files in Athens, Georgia, identified one archaeological site within 0.8 km (0.5 mile) of the survey corridor. This site, 9HM17, consists of a surface scatter of prehistoric artifacts. It is, however, approximately 500 meters (1640 ft) south of the survey corridor and would not be impacted by the proposed improvements. A total of 83 shovel tests were excavated along two transects, none of which yielded artifacts. Field investigations included surface and subsurface evaluation methods to determine if unrecorded archaeological sites are present within the survey corridor. Survey results indicate that no archaeological sites are present within the survey corridor and the area is recommended for clearance.
