Abstract

A Phase I archaeological survey of an approximately 2.5 mile long bypass around Social Circle and a 3,800 foot connector road was conducted August 31 and September 1, 1999. The bypass has 200 feet of proposed right-of-way, while the connector road has only 100 feet. Two pedestrian transects were walked along the bypass corridor and one along the connector road. Shovel test pits were excavated at 30 meter intervals. No archaeological sites were discovered, only an isolated find, a single quartz Morrow Mountain projectile point. The point was found in a heavily disturbed area and no additional artifacts were found. Taken alone, the point does not qualify for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Therefore, no further archaeological investigation of the isolated find or of the bypass or connector road corridors is recommended.
