Abstract

Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., subcontracting with the engineering firm of Keck and Wood, Inc., conducted an archeological survey of proposed connecting roads linking Cottage Hill Road, Stripling Chapel Road and U.S. 27/S.R. 1 in Carrollton, Georgia (Figure 1). The survey was conducted during the first week of May, 2000.

The connecting roads will be constructed by Carroll County under the auspices of the Georgia Department of Transportation. Therefore the survey was undertaken to ensure that Carroll County is in compliance with State regulations (Georgia Environmental Policy Act) concerning the identification and protection of significant archeological sites. The survey found no archeological sites within the proposed road corridors.

The net length of the project is about 2.1 km (7000 ft) and the average width of the right-of-way is 25 m (80 ft). Three segments of road connectors were surveyed. Road "A," which will be known as Windmill Parkway, is the longest of the three. It begins on the south at Stripling Chapel Road (C.R. 24), then goes on new location, ending at Cottage Hill Road (C.R. 34). The length of Road "A" is approximately 1.54 km (5050 ft). Road "B" will connect Road "A" to U.S. 27 to the east. Total length of Road "B" is 440 m (1450 ft). Road "C" will extend north from the mid-segment of Road "B" to connect with South Cottage Hill Road. Total length of this segment is about 140 m (450 ft). Figure 2 depicts the three proposed roads.
