On May 18, 2000 Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. (SAS) conducted a Phase I intensive cultural resources survey for the proposed replacement of the US 19/SR 3 bridge over Potato Creek in Upson County, Georgia. The survey was conducted for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) through the firms J. B. Trimble and Edwards Pitman Environmental, Inc. in Atlanta. The area of potential effect was defined broadly to include 30 m (100 ft) of new right-of-way on either side of the existing right-of-way for a distance of 305 m (1000 ft) from the creek crossing. The final, actual area of potential effect is expected to be smaller than the area surveyed for cultural resources. The intensive cultural resources survey located one prehistoric archeological site, 9UP73. This site is multicomponent with a Late Archaic/Early Woodland occupation and a Woodland or Mississippian occupation. Earlier Archaic occupations are also likely to be present. Because of the potential for preserved intrasite data, 9UP73 is recommended potentially eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places and will require additional archeological investigation if it cannot be avoided by the bridge replacement project. Project engineers were advised of the location and extent of 9UP73 and have determined that the site is outside of the project's area of potential effect. We therefore conclude that the project will not affect any significant archeological resources and no further archeological work is needed.
