Abstract

The purpose of this project is to expand the NaviGAtor system on 1-285 from the 1-75 South Interchange in Clayton County east to the 1-20 interchange in DeKalb County (Figure 1). This project will add fiber optic trunk lines along 1-285, tying together Hub L (located at the 1-75 interchange), Hub V (a new bub located at the 1-675 interchange), and Hub I (located on 1-20 at Columbia Drive). The fiber optic trunk: line, totaling 23.9 miles, will be located under the northbound and southbound shoulders.

Other devices included in this project will be three types of cameras, one used for general traffic surveillance one used for vehicle detection, and the last used for security in the new hub building. The traffic surveillance and vehicle detection cameras will be mounted on concrete poles (approximately 63) located mainly off the shoulder of the freeway. However, where appropriate, some cameras may be mounted on existing sign structures or in the median of the roadway. The project will include approximately 18 color pan/tilt/zoom cameras and 105 black-and-white video detection cameras.

Three changeable message signs (CMSs) are proposed for this project. One CMS will be located on northbound 1-285 approximately 1 mile before the 1-675 southbound ramp. The other two CMSs will be located on southbound 1-285: approximately 2 miles before the 1-675 southbound ramp and 2 miles before the 1-75 ramps.

It is important to note that all of the proposed devices will be constructed within the existing, disturbed rights-of-way of the interstates
