Archaeological Assessment of the Navigator Weather Monitoring Stations

Report Number
2134
Abstract

The purpose of this project is to expand the Georgia DOT's NaviGAtor System with the construction of33 weather monitoring and reporting devices. Twenty-three of these are along the interstate system and 10 locations are along major state highways (see attached list and Figure 1 for locations). All locations will be capable of reporting general weather conditions.

A typical weather monitoring and reporting system is located 6 - 20 ft from the edge of the existing pavement. The system is pole-mounted and includes wind speed/direction sensors, a precipitation sensor, a closed circuit television camera, an air temperature/relative humidity sensor, and an equipment cabinet. Underground features include 2" steel conduits that will connect with power sources and telephone lines, two pull boxes, a concrete base for the pole, and six 10' grounding rods. Figure 2 is a typical plan. It is important to note that all of these components will be within the existing road right-of-way.
