Abstract

A cultural resource survey has been completed on five parcels of National Forest land in a proposed land exchange in Habersham and Stephens Counties, Georgia. The exchange involves approximately 572 acres of National Forest land being exchanged for approximately 500 acres of private in-holdings and adjacent private land in various parcels. Only the National Forest lands to be exchanged and taken out of government ownership were surveyed. A total of three historic house sites were found and all heavily disturbed. All of the sites had twentieth century structures, and all have been removed. None of them are eligible for the National Register. It is recommended that this project proceed as planned. This report is directed towards identifying and recording cultural resource properties, both prehistoric and historic, in compliance with Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended; the USDA Forest Service Southern Region Programmatic Agreement, and the Memorandum of Understanding with the Georgia State Historic Preservation Officer; and NEPA.
