Abstract

An archaeological survey of the proposed Blythe Island Regional Park was conducted for the Glynn County, Georgia, Department of Leisure Services. Twenty-one prehistoric and historic archaeological sites were recorded. The sites range from small single shell middens to large multiple shell midden sites, include one non-shell site and contain Deptford, Swift Creek, Wilmington, Savannah, and early nineteenth century archaeological components. The assemblage of prehistoric and historic sites are eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places as an archaeological district. Direct impact from construction of the park will adversely effect five sites. The recommended plan of mitigation involves avoidance for two sites (9Gnl48 and 9Gnl49) and test excavations at the remaining three (9Gn155, 9Gn156, and 9Gn157).
