Abstract

Cultural resources investigations of the Pine Lakes Golf Course on Jekyll Island (Glynn County), Georgia, were conducted in June 2001, by Brockington and Associates, Inc., under a contract with Clyde Johnston Designs, Inc. These investigations were conducted in anticipation of proposed golf course design changes. The primary goal during this fieldwork was to locate previously unrecorded cultural resources (specifically, archaeological sites) within the area of potential effect (APE) of the golf course. The APE encompasses Pine Lakes Golf Course in its entirety and overlapping portions of adjacent Indian Mound Golf Course. Archaeological investigations followed standard survey methods and were directed by personnel meeting the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines. Archaeological survey resulted in the discovery, recording, and evaluation of two cultural resources. There are no architectural resources present within the project area. Archaeological site 9GN288 is a subsurface scatter of prehistoric ceramics with associated oyster shell. This site has been disturbed by previous golf course construction and exhibits no significant intact deposits. Site 9GN288 is recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Site 9GN289 is segment of an abandoned roadway, formerly McCormick Road. This site also includes a sparse scatter of historic roadside debris (e.g., bottle glass). Artifact deposits are extremely limited and site 9GN289 exhibits no historical significance, therefore this site is also recommended ineligible for the NRHP. We recommend no additional management considerations at either of these sites.
