Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of two bridges that traverse a tributary of the North Fork Peachtree Creek for replacement on Mercer University Drive and Flowers Road in DeKalb County, Georgia. The Mercer University Drive Bridge has a 60 foot wide and 0.21 mile long right-of-way. The Flowers Road Bridge has a 50 foot wide and 0.21 mile long right-of-way. The project area consists of flood plains, recent commercial business development and road construction. The survey did not locate any archaeological sites along either of the bridges, but the semi-flat topography on the southwest quadrant of the Flowers Road Bridge could suggest gradual alluvial sedimentation over a long period of time. Intact soil horizons, which could contain deeply buried archaeological sites beneath could have been possible in this area. For this reason, a geoarchaeological assessment was recommended. However, after inspection of this area by the geoarchaeologist, no indications of buried, intact cultural deposits were located. This survey does not recommend any further archaeological study for either the Mercer University Bridge replacement or Flowers Road project area
