Abstract

This is a cultural resources survey of 201.84 acres of land in four parcels or tracts of the Chattahoochee National Forest in Lumpkin County Georgia, prior to a proposed land exchange between the Forest Service and Mr. Lowell Dunn. Waters Creek and the Chestatee River drain the two northern parcels, near the Waters Creek Campground on Forest Road 34. Mill Creek drains the southern two pieces, Land Lots 158 and 177. The survey located two historic resources and two prehistoric sites. One of the historic resources was considered potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. This was an early 20th century canal that carried water to an electric power plant located at Turner's Corner, about two canal miles away from the surveyed land. The canal crossed 1,800 feet of the surveyed parcel in one long and several short pieces. Alternatives and recommendations for treatment of these resources are presented in the final section of the report.
