Abstract

Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc. conducted an archaeological survey for the proposed drainage improvement along Main Street from 5th Avenue to 2nd Avenue in Moultrie (Colquitt County), Georgia (Figures 1 and 2). This work was conducted on behalf of the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), under contract with Wolverton & Associates, who has an on-call services contract with GDOT. Wolverton & Associates then contracted Parsons, Brinckerhoff, Quade, and Douglas, Inc., (PBQD) an engineering firm in Atlanta, who hired Southern Research to conduct the archaeological survey portion of the project. Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, requires that the Federal Highway Administration (or other federal agencies) take into account potential adverse effects to significant historic properties within the area of potential effect (APE). The purpose of the project was to locate archaeological resources within the APE and assess their National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility status.
