Abstract

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) wishes to replace a structurally deficient bridge on County Route 332 (CR 332, or "Back Berryton Road") in Chattooga County (Figure 1). The bridge spans Raccoon Creek in northwest Berryton. Southeastern Archeological Services conducted an intensive archeological survey of the project area to ensure compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. This act stipulates that federal agencies-in this case the Federal Highway Administration-take into account an undertaking's potential adverse effects to significant cultural resources. The goals of the survey were to locate, delineate, describe, and evaluate archeological sites in the project's area of potential effect (APE), in terms of eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The field survey was conducted on April 27th, 2001 by archeologists Chad Braley and Margaret Spalding.
