Abstract

On February 12, 2001, staff archaeologists from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) conducted an archaeological survey of CR 201 in Treutlen County, Georgia. More specifically, GDOT project PR-201(283) would grade, drain, base, and surface CR 201. The existing CR 201 roadway within the project corridor consists of a graded improved dirt road with a variable 26 to 30 foot travel surface. The survey was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, and the Georgia Environmental Policy Act of 1991. The goals of the survey were to locate, document, and assess archaeological resources which may be eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the Georgia Register of Historic Places (GRHP) located within the proposed project's area of potential effect (APE). One archaeological resource, 9TU22, was identified immediately adjacent to the project area. Because site 9TU22 was located outside of the project's APE, no determination of eligibility for the NRHP and GRHP was made. Therefore, it is concluded that implementation of GDOT project PR-201(283), Treutlen County, will not affect archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion on the NRHP or the GRHP, provided that the project conforms to the present design concept.
