Abstract

An intensive archeological survey was conducted of the proposed West Hiram Parkway Extension corridor in Paulding County, Georgia. The corridor, located west of Hiram, runs from US 278 south approximately 3.6 kilometers to a point south of Ballentine Drive and ranges in width from 60 to 75 meters. Three archeological sites were identified during the survey and include one Late Archaic lithic scatter (Site 9PA128), one prehistoric lithic scatter of unknown cultural affiliation (Site 9PA130), and one historic liquor still (Site 9PA129) dating to the middle 20th century. Due to disturbed conditions and low artifact density, these sites are recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to the three archeological sites, two historic railroads cross the southern portion of the project corridor. The Seaboard Coast rail line, running east-west, is an abandoned rail line which has been converted into the Silver Comet bicycle trail through the "Rails to Trails" program. The second rail line, the Southern Railroad, also runs east-west, and is still in use. These resources should not be impacted by the road corridor, since a bridge crossing over each line is planned.
