Abstract

Between April 15 and April 23, 2002 Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. (SAS) surveyed 39 intersections along VS Highway 411State Route 7 in Lamar, Pike and Spalding Counties, between Barnesville and Griffin, Georgia (Figure 1). The survey was undertaken to ensure that the Georgia Department of Transportation is in compliance with federal regulations concerning the disposition and protection of significant cultural resources (National Historic Preservation Act of 1966--as amended). The goal of the survey was to locate, describe and evaluate the significance of archeological sites within the areas of potential effect for the 39 intersections. All intersections will be improved by the addition or expansion of right turn lanes or the addition of median cross-over lanes. Only one archeological site was discovered, and we recommend that it is not eligible to the National Register of Historic Places. We further recommend that no significant archeological sites will be affected by the proposed intersection improvements and that no further archeological studies are needed at these intersections.
