Abstract

A Phase I archeological resources survey of the proposed Atlanta Area National Cemetery tract was conducted to locate archeological resources within the project area and evaluate their significance using NRHP criteria. The survey area encompasses 313.1 hectares (775 acres) immediately north of Highway 20 between Cartersville and Canton. Thirty archeological sites and nine isolated finds were identified as a result of this survey. Eleven of these sites were previously recorded archeological resources. As a result of the Phase I investigation, prehistoric occupations from the Early Archaic, Early and Middle Woodland, and Transitional Late Woodland/Mississippian (Woodstock Phase) were identified. Temporal designation of historic sites date to the early through late 20th century. Eighteen archeological sites and the nine isolated finds are recommended ineligible for the NRHP. Ten sites located during the survey are recommended potentially eligible for the National Register. Two rock shelters within the project boundaries have an unknown NRHP eligibility status.
