Abstract

The Madison County Board of Commissioners contracted with Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc. (Southern Research) to perform a phase one archaeological survey of a 31.54 acre tract of land located approximately 1.3 miles northwest of downtown Danielsville in Madison County, Georgia (Figure 1). The property is adjacent to Madison County's existing recreation facility and the addition of 31 acres will allow the county to expand its services to the citizens. Plans for development are non-specific at this time; however, athletic fields, greenspaces and hiking trails have been proposed (personal communication between the Principal Investigator and Mr. Richard Perpall, Recreation Director).

The Area of Potential Effect (APE) was considered to be the entire 31.54 acre tract. The west side of the tract is bounded by Brewer Phillips Road; the east side abuts a southerly-flowing intermittent stream and the west side of an existing county park. The purpose of the investigation was to identify archeological resources within the project area and to evaluate the eligibility of the identified resources for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).

As a result of the survey, three cultural resources were identified within the project area. This includes two prehistoric lithic scatters and an isolated prehistoric artifact. None of the artifacts are diagnostic of a particular time period. All of these resources are recommended ineligible for inclusion in the NRHP.
