Abstract

The Georgia Department of Transportation proposes to replace the bridge on SR 16/US 27 Alternate over the Chattahoochee River at the Carroll-Coweta County Line. The proposed bridge replacement will consist of relocating SR 16/US 27 Alternate west of the present location. The relocated SR 16/US 27 Alternate will consist of two, 12' lanes with 10' rural shoulders (2' paved). The proposed new bridge will be 810' x 44' and will be located just west of the existing bridge structure. In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, GDOT Project BR-0001-00(357), Carroll-Coweta Counties, Georgia, was surveyed with respect to archeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. An archeological survey of 5600 square feet of required right-of-way from the West Point Lake Rain Gage Facilities was required_ under the provisions of the Archeological Resources Protection Act of 1979. A permit to conduct the survey was received on October 21, 2002 (ARPA Permit No. DACW01-4-03-0025), and the survey was performed on November 20, 2002. The survey consisted of a pedestrian survey and systematic shovel testing across the area. The goals of the survey were to locate, document, and assess the National Register eligibility of archeological remains located within the project's area of potential effect (APE). During the course of the survey, no archeological sites on or potentially eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places were located within the proposed project's APE. Therefore, the proposed bridge replacement project will not affect significant (eligible to the National Register) archeological resources.
