Abstract

A Phase I archaeological survey of the Sixes Road study corridor was conducted October 1, 2002. The right-of-way of the short corridor, only 0.32 miles in length, is to be widened from 60 to 100 feet. Shovel testing and surface inspection of exposed soils on both sides of the corridor revealed considerable soil erosion in the corridor. No artifacts or surface features were found and no additional archaeological study is recommended. The Toonigh Church cemetery on the south side of the corridor has several marked graves on a knoll approximately six feet above and 15 feet south of the existing road. According to the engineers, the new pavement will not extend past the existing pavements edge.
