Abstract

The survey described here was designed to locate and evaluate archeological sites in the area of a Fayette County bridge replacement proposed by the Georgia Department of Transportation. The bridge that would be replaced is the crossing of State Route (SR) 85 over Morning Creek, 5.6 km (3.5 mi) north of Fayetteville. Intensive archeological survey found no historic period or prehistoric artifacts in the project area, which is severely disturbed by grading for existing developments. Our observations led us to conclude that the project area contains no archeological sites. As a result of this conclusion, we recommend that no significant archeological resources (sites eligible to the National Register of Historical Places) exist within the proposed project corridor. Regarding such resources, we suggest the project be allowed to proceed as planned within the surveyed corridor.
