Abstract

The survey described here was designed to locate and evaluate archeological sites in the area of a bridge replacement project proposed by the Georgia Department of Transportation. The proposed project includes the replacement of two bridges over the North and South Forks of the Ogeechee River, south of the city of Crawfordville in Taliaferro County. The survey located a portion of one archeological site (9TL26) within the project corridor. Based on the few artifacts found in the project area, the site appears to be a very sparse prehistoric lithic scatter with an isolated historic nail. Southeastern Archeological Services recommends that the segment of site 9TL26 within the area of potential effect does not contain archeologically significant deposits that would contribute to the eligibility of the site to the National Register of Historic Places. Since we examined only that portion of site 9TL26 within the area of potential effect, we cannot assess the site as a whole and its eligibility remains unknown. Based on the surveyed site segment, the proposed bridge replacement will have no adverse effect on significant archeological resources. Other considerations notwithstanding, we suggest that it be allowed to proceed as planned.
