Abstract

The cultural resource assessment of Providence Canyon State Park was undertaken at the request of the Design Assistance Section, Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Design Assistance is preparing a general development plan for the park which includes consideration of the cultural resources within its boundaries. Objectives of the assessment are to identify known or potential significant resources which can be preserved or interpreted for public enjoyment and to prevent inadvertent damage to them during development. The author appreciates the data on the park supplied by John R. Morgan of the Historic Preservation Section, the soils information supplied by James Napier of the Soil Conservation Service in Stewart County, and assistance with identifying historic artifacts provided by Patricia O'Grady.
