Abstract

On June 14, 2002, the proposed improvements to the intersection of SR 26 and SR 87/US 23 (the Cochran Bypass) were archeologically surveyed. The area of potential effect (APE) generally consisted of 16 m of area from the edges of the respective roads for approximately 220 m in each direction. Nearly the entire project area consisted of existing right-of-way, which has been extensively modified by shoulder grading and drainage ditch construction. Nevertheless, we recorded two archeological sites, 9BY32 and 9BY33, which represent the artifactual remains of two adjacent early to middle twentieth century houses. Neither site retains enough preservation integrity to warrant further investigation and both are recommended ineligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
