Archaeological Investigations at Fort Stewart An Intensive Archaeological Survey of 9,994 Acres

From December 1, 1999 to May 15, 2000, Panamerican Consultants, Inc. (PCI) conducted an intensive archaeological survey of 9,994 ac. (4,043 ha) within Fort Stewart Military Reservation, Bryan and Liberty counties, Georgia. The investigation represents the product of a contract with the National Park Service and Fort Stewart. The current delivery order's survey tracts consist of NRMUs A5.1, B4.7, B9.3, B 11.2, B 11.5, E l.2, E1.3, E2.2, F1.1, F1.2, F14.1, F18.1, F18.2, and F20.3. A total of 161 cultural resource loci were investigated during this survey (Appendix G). The resources include 67 sites, four of which were previously recorded and 94 new isolated finds. A potentially eligible National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility status was assigned to eight of the sites: 9BN284, 9BN286, 9BN289, 9BN290, 9BN308, 9BN319, 9BN321, and 9BN326. The remaining cultural resources were recommended ineligible for inclusion in the NRHP. The current study includes background contextual information as well as data analyses. Background contextual information includes a discussion of the cultivation of tobacco within the Fort Stewart area. The data analyses include a study of site locations in respect to various environmental variables. Various distributional studies are undertaken herein, including analysis of site and artifact data on the intrasite and intersite level. Also, OCR assays were generated from soil samples collected during the fieldwork, and a discussion of these is included.
