Abstract

A Phase I cultural resources survey of the proposed 253 hectare reservoir site and buffer zone in south Fulton County, Georgia was conducted to locate and identify cultural resources within the project area and assess resource significance. The project area is located approximately 2.8 kilometers northeast of Rico, Georgia, and approximately 0.8 kilometers east of the Chattahoochee River. In total, 30 archeological sites and six isolated finds were recorded. Based on survey data seventeen archeological sites and six isolated finds are recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Phase II archeological evaluations were conducted on twelve prehistoric sites that were considered potentially eligible for the NRHP. Four of these sites (9FU419, 9FU423, 9FU428, and 9FU430) have been recommended eligible for the NRHP. Phase III archeological data recovery excavations are recommended for three of these sites (9FU419, 9FU423, and 9FU428). Site 9FU430 will receive no adverse effect, and in-place preservation is recommended. The thirteenth potentially eligible site is an early 20'' century historic cemetery (9FU449). This cemetery is outside of the proposed reservoir boundary, but within the project APE, and will receive no adverse effect. The remaining potentially eligible sites are determined to be ineligible for the NRHP following Phase II testing.
